On a tandem…
First ride together: July 1988. We rented a tandem while on vacation in Washington State and rode just a few miles to a beach and back. Denise recalls it being difficult to pedal!
First cycling tour: The Great Allegheny Passage and C&O Towpath, Pittsburgh, PA to Washington DC, September 2014, 351 miles, 6 days.
Longest ride in a day: 105 miles, October 2014.
Most unique place ridden: To the lava fields in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, September 2017.
Longest cycling tour: Natchez Trace Parkway, 506 miles, 8 days, March 2017.
Most elevation change ridden in a day: 3590 feet in 69 miles, Kingsville, OH to Spring Creek, PA, May 2016
Most remote ride: Idaho Panhandle, Day #3, July 2016. Rode for 54 miles and did not see another person on the trail. We were also attentively on the lookout for bear, mountain lion, moose, wolf, coyote, and elk—none of which we saw, although the dense forest on both sides of the trail would have been perfect cover!
Favorite local trail system: Denise’s is the Pumpkinvine Trail near her hometown in Goshen, IN
Number of states ridden: 25
Favorite type of riding: Denise really likes riding trails. Rail-to-trails tend to be relatively flat with beautiful scenery and you don’t have to worry about vehicles. Plus it is an awesome experience to be able to follow trail systems and bicycle into the heart of major cities.
Favorite ride: the one we do today!
